Flame Off

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93CZ6oFR8Q0

For the Flame Off, I watched a video of Miley Cyrus covering a Lana Del Ray song, Summertime Sadness. I tried to steer away from Miley, but most of the videos I was drawn to were either full of chain letter-type comments or positive feedback supporting the video. I had hard time posting comments, I am much more of a timid online participant and rarely post comments or feedback. This assignment was challenging as I feel I do not have any experience posting comments on YouTube.

The most common theme of all the comments questioned Miley's ability to sing as well as Lana Del Ray. Some loved the Miley version and some preferred Lana's original. I really don't have an opinion either way, but do think the two artists have very different fan bases. This fact I think created the context for the varying opinions. I tried to create my own comments, but realized how easy it can be to "troll." My intention, of course, was not to start a fight, but after trying to write comments, I realized many of the things I felt like contributing could be perceived as "flaming." I also think that by posting very neutral and productive comments, people were less likely to engage in the questions I brought up.

For this assignment, I changed my username to a.h. for more anonymity.

Horrible. I hope miley dies so she can never make another cover or shitty new song. Whos with ne?

I'm with you that I don't like it, but that's so hurtful and immature think before you click send

+Amy Esdaile I agree. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but our opinions don't have to be expressed in such negative ways.

what if Lana were to cover one of Miley's songs. How would people react to them switching the roles like that?

She's not a slut, skank or tramp so everyone whose saying that shut up. Just because she acts differently to what we're use to doesn't make her any of those words. She's amazing and awesome in her own way. Don't judge others if you don't like to be judged. Keep your negative comments to yourself.

She is most certainly a slut and a skank.  Sorry if actions have repercussions in the real world.  If you wish to keep living in your little liberal bubble that's fine by me, but in reality, if you act like a whore people are going to call you a whore.

LOL act's differently to what we are use to, she's not the first famous person to Act different to get attention, fame, money. She was slowly becoming a nobody so she had to change to get her ratings up (you shouldn't change to please others). She can do what she wants, but I think it's disgusting having her parents, grandparents and the rest of her family watch her on television while she's half naked rubbing herself against some dude. SICK

+endocry what exactly are the repercussions for male singers who exploit sex in their music and performance because there certainly don't seem to be a lot.

I don't think the question is whether she is a slut or a skank - can any of us really speak about her experiences and actions when all we see is what she portrays herself to be in front of the camera? I think the real question is why the world we live in allows for us to judge and label people such nasty names.

I am new to YouTube and do not understand the overwhelming dislike for this new comment system. Could you help me understand this dislike better? And possibly explain why posting about it on every video actually makes a difference? To me it seems to just distract from the actual video and interferes with the comments section more than the new format.

I understand people are against Google+ and the new comment system on YouTube, but don't you think the over posting of the "bob" comments are more detrimental to the comment section than the new format?
