650,000 students take college entrance exam
More than 650,000 high school seniors and graduates took the annual college entrance exam. College Scholastic Ability Test is the most important and crucial exam of their academic careers deciding in their choice of college and future professions. 650,747 people applied to take the nine-hour standardized CSAT. The exam is divided into five subjects; Korean language, mathematics, English, social and natural sciences and a second foreign language. The test started at 8:40 a.m. and was to run through 5 p.m., including lunch and breaks. Students who took the test had to enter the test site until 8:10 a.m. The government imposed traffic control and anti-noise measures for the most crucial test in a student's academic life. Transportation such as bus and subway train extended their rush hour services to help all exam-takers arrive at the test sites on time. The stock markets, government offices and enterprises in nearby test sites opened an hour later than usual to keep the roads are not rushed for students on their way to the test center. Police operated a call center for students who need a ride offering to transport them to the test centers by patrol car or on the back of a motorcycle. Flight landings and takeoffs were banned for 40 minutes in the afternoon. That period was a listening section of the English exam. This article is about just facts.
Jenna Marbles- What Disney Movies Taught Me
I always love watching Jenna Marbles's videos on YouTube. This video in particular is one of my favorites. She uses examples from many Disney movies as evidence for her argument that Disney movies teach people a range of things, such as the idea that all people who are "old, fat, and ugly" are evil, and that a girl's only purpose in life is to "find a prince and marry him". This is argument by example.
I do love the examples that she uses throughout her video. She definitely paid attention to who her audience was and knew that they would all know which Disney movies she was referring to and the story line of each movie (part of Kairos). I feel, however, that she could have made an even better argument if she didn't constantly use vulgar language throughout the video. Although most of the audience she is targeting is mature enough to be able to handle the language she uses, it could still have been a better argument if she didn't curse constantly.
Jenna definitely has good evidence and examples for each argument that she is stating throughout the video. I was quite excited to watch a video where I knew exactly what she was referencing at any point during the video. She is very creative, and makes some very good arguments throughout the video.

Common Core lessons blasted for sneaking politics into elementary classrooms
I read an article called “Common Core lessons blasted for sneaking politics into elementary classrooms” on foxnews.com. It claims that Common Core courses give primary students misleading political knowledges in English class material, which is harmful for children’s education.
At the beginning of the article, the author makes a fact claim: “Partisan political statements masquerading as English lessons.” Worksheets published by New Jersey-based Pearson Education is an example. The context of the worksheets mislead elementary students’ understanding of the job of president. The argument that the author makes by example is convincing and works perfect. The consequences of this incorrect material like leading children to be indoctrinated instead of educated illustrate the author’s opinion further. Then, the author provides some counterclaims and rebuts them. The the Pearson official argues that the purpose of the material is to help with students’ English skill instead of the knowledge of the Constitution. However, the author gives some evidence saying that there are many states used this Common Core Standard Initiative, which indicates the importance of this Standard and how much the influence will be if it is not effective and incorrect. According to the quotation, the arguments that critics make are really good. They mention that the Common Core math standards almost doesn’t cover basic geometry or second-year algebra. What’s more, they not only argue from the Standard is not standard, but also argue that “the federal government's job to impose educational standards.”

Hallyu becomes new engine for magazine industry
http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20131105000887
The
article addresses that K-pop contents are getting popular in the world market,
and it becomes new engine for magazine industry as well. The Korean Wave which
called "Hallyu" is a neologism. The word refers to the increase in
the popularity of South Korean culture, not only in a country, but also all
around the world. This "Hallyu" has an huge effect on diverse
industries in a positive way, such as magazine industry. According to the
author, Hallyu has been a good theme for the magazine industry in the past,
especially targeting the Japanese market (value claim). It is actually the
future of the industry for magazines to provide very focused and in-depth
information rather than general articles that can easily be obtained through
the internet. The author claims that the future is quite positive because there
is always a demand for good content among people with very specific interests
(evidence). I personally hope that K-pop contents develop more so that Korean
music or culture can dominate many industries such as the global music market.
Additionally, I assert that the Korean Wave (including K-pop contents and Korean
culture) is successful and helpful in making an active market for music, drama, and movie
in Asia.
People who don't punch their ponies make me sick!
Louis CK has a bit in which he tells a story where his daughter gets bit a pony, and then his daughter then feels the need to research the prevalence of pony biting in the general population. As Louis states, "It's just like everything else on the internet, it's just fighting." One person makes the comment that when ponies bite, the proper punishment is to punch the pony only to have another person reply that anyone who punches their pony should have their pony taken away. Then another person comes in and says, "PEOPLES WHO DON'T PUNCH THEIR PONIES MAKE ME SICK!" (Some flair may have been added.) This final person fits into the article we read for class this week. It's hard to determine whether the person is intentionally trying to create a stir amongst pony owners, by their unorthodox remarks, or if they are really trying to facilitate real discussion. If the former is the case, and the poster was in fact attempting to troll and create a rise amongst the readers then they have the most assuredly succeeded. His or her comment has been featured on a nationally syndicated stand-up routine and elicited a visceral reaction from anyone in the audience who picture someone picture punching ponies. On the other, if the latter is the case, and the person was attempting the open the door to a new avenue of pony training, then perhaps they have failed as pony punching has yet to take hold.
American missionary’s health failing as he marks one year in North Korean custody
The
article that I read for this week is about the imprisonment of an American
Christian missionary, Kenneth Bae, in North Korea. Bae is sentenced fifteen
years of imprisonment in the hard labor camp in North Korea. The United States
government and Bae’s family claim that the North Korean authorities should immediately
release Bae on humanitarian grounds. The value claim that they have made is
supported by various grounds. First, Bae’s health becomes crucial and failing
after the one year of imprisonment in hard labor camp. Currently, Bae is
hospitalized in Rajin, a small city in North Korea, where he cannot receive
full treatment for diabetes and enlarged heart. Secondly, Bae is the only U.S.
citizen who has been held by North Korean authorities more than a year since
the Korean War. The precedent tells that the imprisonments of U.S. citizens did
not exceed a year to release them. Lastly, Bae’s Christian group states that “no
one should ever face imprisonment or this type of treatment simply because of
their religious beliefs.” However, North Korean government considers Bae’s
mission trip to North Korea as a serious hostile acts and plotting to overthrow
the government. I do not believe that the North Korean government will change the
decision that has been sentenced to Bae because of moral reasons like
humanitarian grounds. I think North Korea will demand something from the U.S. government
in order to release Kenneth Bae.
Chinese Pop Music History 20 Years Special - Jay Chou
The
article claims that Jay Chou, as the King of Chinese pop music, is a
legend because of his talent. The author talks about Jay’s early albums and
achievements as evidences to show Jay’s popularity and the top place in Asia
pop music. Firstly, all of Jay’s songs are composed by himself, each of which
is unique and shows off his musical
talent. As backings, Jay’s ballads are beautiful, as well as being moving and
honest, while his fast-paced rapping and word twisting is very impressive. Secondly, young people adore
him and imitate his confidence as well as ambition. He is the perfect example
of the "I-generation"- the post-80s generation. As backings for this
point, the author mentions Jay’s concerts that it is not unusual to see his
fans cheer wildly and sing loudly with him from below. Jay bombards the
audience with various music styles including hip-hop and unplugged versions. Jay's
talent is the warrant that has brought him fame. As rebuttal, even though
people say that Jay has a bad mouth since his lyrics are blurred and inexplicit,
the term “Jay Style" has already been
popularized to describe his trademark cross-cultural music and his insistence
on singing with slurred enunciation. Jay combines both Chinese and Western
musical styles to produce a sound unique to mainstream Chinese pop, which
contributes to the "Chinese-style music".
The Undisputed Truth: Mike Tyson
Today i dove into one of the best, and most serious articles i have ever read. Mike Tyson is an incredible boxer in the ring but his life outside of the ropes has been everything but easy. This article has just about every aspect of argument in it. One story that really caught my eye towards the end of the article was his rape case. He used causal argument backed up with argument by example to prove his point.
If you’re big, black, and strong, you’re a rapist; if you’re smart and Jewish, you’re a tax cheat; if you’re an Italian in a nice suit, you’re a fuckin’ gangster; if you’re a Latino, you’re having a bunch of babies and making money off welfare. These are stereotypes, and we get convicted in this country based on these stereotypes.”
Mikes statement above is extremely persuasive because not only does he bring up one racial stereotype, he brings four prominent races to the table and speaks out on their greatest stereotypical problems. Tyson is an authoritative figure, but because of his history, he is not considered a very bright mind.
Mike was sentenced to six years for his rape case because he lacked a strong enough argument in the court room. Only saying that the two had consensual sex is not good enough considering the fact that he was with a 18 year old woman. He believed that due to the perception of black males above, he had no chance in the court room against such a young woman. Mike lacks the ethos he needed to win the trial. His foul mouth and violent history gave him little to no credibility in a court of law. Also, because of Mikes stone cold expressions and lack of emotion gives a crowd very little pathos to fall back on in his argument.
