The Undisputed Truth: Mike Tyson

Today i dove into one of the best, and most serious articles i have ever read. Mike Tyson is an incredible boxer in the ring but his life outside of the ropes has been everything but easy. This article has just about every aspect of argument in it. One story that really caught my eye towards the end of the article was his rape case. He used causal argument backed up with argument by example to prove his point.

If you’re big, black, and strong, you’re a rapist; if you’re smart and Jewish, you’re a tax cheat; if you’re an Italian in a nice suit, you’re a fuckin’ gangster; if you’re a Latino, you’re having a bunch of babies and making money off welfare. These are stereotypes, and we get convicted in this country based on these stereotypes.”

Mikes statement above is extremely persuasive because not only does he bring up one racial stereotype, he brings four prominent races to the table and speaks out on their greatest stereotypical problems. Tyson is an authoritative figure, but because of his history, he is not considered a very bright mind.

Mike was sentenced to six years for his rape case because he lacked a strong enough argument in the court room. Only saying that the two had consensual sex is not good enough considering the fact that he was with a 18 year old woman. He believed that due to the perception of black males above, he had no chance in the court room against such a young woman. Mike lacks the ethos he needed to win the trial. His foul mouth and violent history gave him little to no credibility in a court of law. Also, because of Mikes stone cold expressions and lack of emotion gives a crowd very little pathos to fall back on in his argument.
